Where in Russia can i study abroad?

I'm planning to study abroad to Russia, i want to learn the language, i'm familiar with the alphabet and a few words.., any ways i'm not sure where in Russia, i'm thinking about

Vladivostok which is located above China and Korea

OR

St. Petersburg which is located below Finland

I'm the person that prefers to go where there is not that many people.I leaning closer to Vladivostok since it's not as well known as Moscow or St. Petersburg and there are study abroad programs there avalible. I like to hear an other opinion...

Also if anyone reccomends another city in Russia I should study abroad to please tell me.

THANKS

Where in Russia can i study abroad?
personally, if you have to choose between the two, i would choose st petersburg without a doubt.

but, i would recommend looking into some other programs too. i'm not sure where you are from, but if you're from america i can give you a few suggestions. i studied with american councils (http://www.actr.org/index.php) and i absolutely loved it. their university study abroad programs are offered for a summer, semester, or academic year, and you can choose to stay with a russian family or in a dorm (stay with a family if you can! it will do wonders for your russian!) you can choose to go to either moscow, st petersburg, or vladimir. since you prefer to go where there aren't so many people i would recommend vladimir; thats where i stayed. its a city about 4 hours east (maybe north too?) outside of moscow on the klyazma river. it a gorgeous old city and its part of russia's golden ring. its not too crowded, but it is still a city, so there are always things to do. and also, it is rich with russian culture. and you could always easily take a trip to moscow or st petersburg, not to mention the other cities of the golden ring)!

the other university program i know of is CIEE (http://ciee.org/program_search/search_re... i don't know much about this program and i think they only offer courses in st petersburg.

also, most colleges will accept credit from both of these programs, just make sure to check beforehand!

hope i was of some help!
Reply:My advice to you would be teach English for a year. With Russian friends and maybe a couple of lessons a week, you will pick the language up as much through necessity as anything.

Reply:Rostov-on-Don,here is big base for education in our South Federal University,a lot of african and asian students, here warm climate, not so cold as in Vladivostok or Moscow, this day it was +15C and suny...
Reply:If you are seriously entertaining the thought of spending a winter in Vladivostock over St. Petersburg because you don't like people, you aren't thinking rationally.
Reply:I have a perfect answer for you.

A city called Velikiy Novgorod, the oldest city of Russia, situated between Moscow and St. Petersburg but much smaller and quieter with great culture.

Novgorod State University has a Department of Russian for Foreign Students.

You might want to check out this site http://www.novsu.ru/english/admission/

And just in case you are curious about the city -

Reply:St. Petes is a great city, I absolutely love it. However St. Pete's it is not Russia. Neither is Vladivostok.

IMO the best area to look for a university to study abroad would be in the European part south of Moscow, somewhere between the border and Volgograd, Samara, Kazan and Nishny Novgorod.

Russia has a large number of universities, there has got to be one in that part of the country where you can do an exchange.

BTW, I would like to know which university you choose. I've been looking into taking lessons in Russian myself and would be very interested in where you end up. Difference is only that I am on a more advanced level, since I have been having lessons for over 5 years now.
