To those of you who have studdied in europe or the rest of the world, what would you say about your experiences?
I have been looking at lots of different uni's and there is the option to study abroad, it looks really interesting. What advise would you give me if i went?
Also what kind of differences does it make on fee's?
Whats is it like going abroad to study?
I'm currently studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, so I have somewhat of an idea as to what it feels like. First of all, you will be homesick. Prepare for that-- if you're not ready, don't commit to a program that's too long for you (as I believe I have). Remember, as much as this is about learning, it's about having fun! Don't overdo your stay if you won't enjoy it.
Also, be prepared to deal with a lot of frustration and feelings of inferiority-- I speak some german, but coming here and trying to understand people talking very fast is extremely difficult for me, and I'm still trying to learn it. You go through different stages of admiration and hate for your new country, fascination and then a want to get out.
Overall, it's worth it to do, at least that's how I feel so far. Do it while you can, but don't pressure yourself into a yearlong program if you don't feel you are capable of it. Know your limits and enjoy your trip, wherever you may be going =)
Reply:You are in a different society and culture. You have to learn and adapt to the ways and customs of the people living there.
Reply:My best opinion: would be to ask those that have come from abroad to study in North America. It is quite a transition from their point of view! Be weary of culture shock. It makes a huge difference on your fees - can you afford it? It is fun just be aware of culture differences.
Reply:The best option is to be open minded because you be open to a new world where they do everything differently, and you will be experiencing new things. Sometimes in the beginning your home sick, and not sure you can live with the culture, but with time you will not only enjoy it but appreciate you had the opportunity to expand your vision of the world.
Reply:hard...... and alot ov work
Reply:In comparison to the British universities (except Oxbridge) it is EXTREMELY hard work and EXTREMELY expensive. I transferred from St Andrews to Pomona College in California when I was in my late teens and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. If you are ambitious and willing to put in the big hours then it is fabulous. If you are only interested in having a good time and jogging along, forget it. You will be out on your ear by the end of the first semester.
