How can I make money in Northern Ireland during my study abroad?
I'm studying abroad in Belfast next fall, and because i'm only going to be in the country for 3 months, I can't get a work permit. I have A TON of experience in child care (babysitting, working at a summer camp for 5 years +, majoring in child psychology and youth studies, etc).
Are there cash-paying nanny or babysitter jobs available? How do I find one? Or are there restaurants/bars/pubs that hire without permits?? Thanks in advance for any information :)

Does anyone know any sites where I can find study abroad programs for the summer (2007) for GRADUATE students? I really can't find much on my own. I'm planning on wanting to go for only a week or two, not the whole summer and I'm in the Communications department. I'm perferably interested in London, but anything will do!

It depends on your school, but I am aware of short term exchange programs in my old school from 8th grade onwards.
These short term exchange programs were with defined schools in other countries for approx. 2 to 4 weeks only. They provided the students the possibility to spend this time in another country immersed in the local school system. If a student was part of the school exchange program their parents had to play host for a student from the family that hosted their child. Since the exchange was fully organized by the participating schools there were no issues with grades and examinations.
What you can always do - with the consent of your parents - is taking part of language school in another country while on vacation. Not all language schools accept minors, some do only if accompanied by a parent or guardian, some require only written consent of a parent or guardian.

How does a person raise money to study abroad for a semester? (Besides government grants and parents)?
I am a junior at an accredited university in the USA. I am wondering how in the world anybody can pay for studying abroad?! I've checked with governmental grants and they are all for high financial need students. My parents can't afford the whole cost and I have a job and work full time. If anybody knows what I haven't tried, please let me know! If not, donations are always excepted to help further the education of America's youth! ;)

They likely will charge you their same U.S. tuition, while the college in the foreign country might charge less. For example, students paying $20,000 in tuition at a fancy private university in the U.S. will pay the same amount of tuition to study in Mexico, even though the tuition in Mexico is far less. This is because the U.S. university can convince parents that the university will "take care of them" while they are in another country. This is largely false. The students will be on their own essentially.
Get the list of what foreign universities your school has programs with or accepts credits from. Then contact the schools that interest you yourself (via the internet) and see if they allow "independent" students. The tuition will probably be a lot less.
The other place that U.S. universities rip off students and their families is in the room and board charges. Your university may charge you $20 a day for room and board but give the family that hosts you only $10.
You will arrive there thinking that you will get three full meals a day whereas the $10 the family gets for you barely covers dry cereal and milk in a major city in Mexico for example, where the costs of food are not that much cheaper than in the U.S. These families often feel resentment towards the students. (One school demands that Mexican hosts cook a "full Mexican breakfast" when people in Mexico often only have coffee and cold cereal for breakfast - just like in the U.S. So these ladies have to spend a lot of money to satisfy some administrator in the U.S.'s idea of some archaic "full Mexican breakfast.") You can find your own housing - stay in a hostel and ask around.
So, avoid the fraud commited by U.S. universities, enroll as a direct student (first make sure your school will accept the credits), do it on your own, and have a better time. Besides, you don't really want to be with a group of people from your school - being an independent student you will have more opportunities to learn a new language.

Should I Study Abroad in Vienna or Geneva?
I have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester, but I can't decide where I should go. I took four years of high school French, so I at least have some understanding of the language, which could help me in Geneva. I also have time to take a German class or two before studying abroad in Vienna, which I've always wanted to visit. Any advice on where I should go would be appreciated.

I can tell you that Switzerland cost of living is very high so it will depend on our budget.
I have an office in Lausanne which is 40 minutes from Geneva so when I say it is great there I say it from first hand knowledge but it is not cheap.

Reply:i think either would be amazing. i've never been to geneva but vienna is amazing! you have the opera house, countless art museums (there's a museum quarter), wonderful cafes...the cathedrals are beautiful and the people are nice. you can also take trips via train out into the country...there's a "wine country" nearby where you can see the vineyards and stop in family owned restaurants to taste the wine made right outside..there are opportunities like these everywhere, though, i'm sure. so i guess it depends on what you're looking to get out of the trip/what you are studying.

I was required to study abroad in another country in order to graduate at my university. Basically we had to take two years of that language (i took spanish) and choose a country to study abroad in for six months (Ecuador). Usually, study abroad programs are more common for University students or college students when they take a foreign language course. Basically we took the same class as the native students so it was pretty hard but a worth while experience. Luckily our study abroad program was pass no pass, other programs are actually graded depending if your major is in that language.
But if you're a high school student, then there is a foreign exchange program you can do if your high school has a foreign language class. You have to do well in those classes and sometimes, your school should have programs like that in the summer so it doesn't conflict with your normal schooling system. Although it's much shorter than university programs. If your school doesn't have those kind of programs, you can ask your language teacher about it.
My friend went to France with her high school French class but had to fundraise alot for it as well as learn the language very well.

I can't speak as to the rest of the country, but I think that Dubai is very safe. Most of the people in Dubai are expatriates, and many of them are from the United States or England.

Can university athletes study abroad? I'm an athlete at a D-3 university. How does this work?
I'm going to be a junior next year, but I'm on the volleyball team here. We are, as I already mentioned, a D-3 school. What is the policy for studying abroad if you are an athlete. I'd like to go to England for an Academic year, but I fear that I may not be allowed to. Any info would be great. Thanks. I'm at an American university by the way.

I ran CC at a D-3 university, my roommate was on the football team and he studied abroad not once, but twice. He was out of the USA for 1 year program and a semester program. In total he missed only one season. He choose to stay in school an extra year, even though he had the credits to graduate in four years. I recall him complaining that after missing a season he had to re-earn his starting spot, but I think that is to be expected. He also had to work out while abroad, which at times presented the challenge of staying motivated.
In short, yes can study abroad. Talk with your coach before going let him/her know you will go and that upon your return you would like to rejoin the team. Hopefully the coach will be supportive of your desire to study abroad. If not you then you may be faced with a tough decision: going abroad or staying and playing volleyball. In the end, the choice, of course, is yours.

I used to work with HPU through an International Hotel Management School in Asia. They have always been very keen to make links/transfer credit agreements for international students to study there, but I can only guess about exchanges going the other way. I would say that it should be a two-way agreement they have with international institutes around the world.

Is a study abroad program for a year worth it??
It is absolutely worth it! I always tell people who are thinking about only doing a summer or a semester to consider doing a year long exchange because you get so much more out of being there for a whole year. Check out AFS, YFU or Rotary, which are three good, reputable exchange programs. AFS and YFU are more expensive, but Rotary is more competitive. I went with Rotary, and I had a great experience, but I know of people who went with AFS who were also very happy with the program.

Opportunity to study abroad in Chile should I do it?
There is an opportunity to study abroad in chile next fall, I would get my second year of spanish credits. It would cost more than regular school and would possibly set me back a year in my chosen career as some prerequisite classes are only offered in fall term and are taken in order. Plus I was thinking about enlisting in the guard and doing basic this summer. It would complicate things a lot, but would be a good experience. What is your opinion?

I have wanted to go to Spain for years and study Spanish since it is my minor.

Are people with felony records allowed to study abroad?
I have two felonies from 2000 and want to study abroad for a 5 week session next spring. Has anyone with a record done this?

There is a not a federal law or statue, to my knowledge, that says that you can not study aboard if you have been convicted of a felony. I know that felonies and drug related convictions mean that you can not get student financial aid, but if you are footing the bill, I do not see a problem with, from a US standpoint.
The real problem will come from the University you plan to visit. Do they do a background check? If they do, then I would assume a felony would exclude you from their program, however, if they do not do it, then they would not know.

How much money should I bring to study abroad in London?
Hi, I'm studying abroad in London during the summer 2007, and I was curious about how much I should bring. I'll be there for 6 weeks, and I understand that things are much more expensive there--especially during the summer. I also understand the exchange rate. I spent 7 weeks in London last fall on study abroad, so I know what it is like to have to deal with all the expenses that come with traveling to London, especially for such a short period of time. The exchange rate is a bit hard to swallow, close to $2.00 for 1 pound. I changes frequently so I have no clue what it will be when you go there. It was between $1.80 and $1.85 for 1 pound when I was there.
How much money you want to bring largely depends upon what you want to do or where you want to go. In the summer I know there are many many free events in parks and free concerts. In London, many of the museums are free, so that is one thing you don't have to worry about. If you plan on traveling on a weekend to somewhere in Europe, you would need to budget for that too. I spent Thanksgiving weekend in Dublin and between plane fare, the hostel, shopping and food it was around $400.
You also need to consider things like food and transportation. A tube pass is a must. Oyster cards (an unlimited tube pass) for that amount of time will be around $250, but it is so helpful. You can travel on buses and the Tube as much as you want in the area you have selected. For food, one of the biggest ways to spend a lot of cash quick is to eat out frequently. There are many places to buy groceries, and though they are more expensive than in the states, you will not spend as much as you would eating out all the time.
It would be wise to check with your bank to see if they have a partnership with any British banks so you don't have to pay ATM fees. Bank of America is partnered with Barclay's so I didn't have to worry about paying $5 everytime I went to the ATM. ATM fees are one way to lose money quickly.
So, if you plan on doing some fun things, eating and doing a bit of shopping, I would plan on taking between $1,500 and $2,000. It's good to be mindful of how much you are spending, but also enjoy London, you are going to have a great time!!

I am an American college student interested in studying abroad. I wish to do so in England, but I am not sure exactly where i want to go. I would much appreciate some local insight, or help from someone who was in a similar situation as I am . I am studying Psychology if that helps.

Look into the entry requirements and choose the best Universities you think you can get into - generally, the better ranked a University, the better your degree will look to employers when you leave. This will help you narrow down the Universities you are truly interested in - then have a closer look at the type of lifestyle etc. they have there.

I plan to study abroad to Germany in a year, though I am also considering Austria. I am trying to figure out some good study abroad programs that include the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as not being too financially draining. Deduct airfare and other expenses related to study abroad?
My husband, a full-time grad student in Ohio, spent one semester studying abroad at a university in Chile. Can we deduct his airfare and living expenses on our tax return? I stayed here and paid 100% of costs of household, but additionally we had to pay rent, groceries, etc. for him while he was gone. How should we handle this on our return?

I'm so indecisive and torn between many places...ireland, brazil, argentina, spain, austrailia, greece. i tell myself that europe is somewhere i could backpack or eventually go, so i should really study abroad somewhere i'd probably never get to go like argentina or south africa. i really want somewhere where its really friendly

I think that Ireland would be a great place to study abroad, I have been to Dublin and I enjoyed it very much, it has a small town feel and everyone there was very friendly and kind.
I personally think that Europe is a great place to study abroad because there is so much opportunity for travel. I studied in London for 4 months and during that time I took many weekend trips, probably to about 10 other countries in Europe overall. Travel within Europe is pretty cheap ($60 round trip flights are VERY easy to find) . I have a friend currently studying in Australia and although she loves it she is bummed that it is really really expensive to travel to near-by places such as New Zealand.
I think that all of your options look great (i know people who have done time abroad in almost all of those places) and to be honest whatever you choose you will have the time of your life, you just need to decide if you want to be able to travel while you are there. My personal first choices (from your list) would be Greece, Spain, Ireland, and then Australia (although I 100% recommend London!) Good Luck and don't stress too much over deciding where to go!

I also need some advice for getting my parents to agree to let me go. I really want a cultural experience, and it would be wonderful for me to go away for at least a semester. Since I speak english, the language thig wouldn't be an issue. I am more interested in the cultural difference between here and England, however minimal it may be. Well, to start, OB is wrong. England DOES allow high school exchanges, YFU does them (www.YFU.org).
However, I question why you would really want to go to England? In persuading your parents to allow an exchange, you're missing one of the biggest benefits -- language immersion! If you become fluent in another language, you can add $10,000 or more per year to your base salary! American companies are crying for those with linguistic abilities! Also, a cultural experience wouldn't be nearly as different from here as it would be to a country with a different language!
Some points to make to your parents: maturity, broadening horizons, language ability AND colleges and universities LOVE exchange students, to the point where many offer preferred admissions and/or scholarship money.

To get my parents to let me go, I made a powerpoint of all the benefits. I showed them how I was going to pay for it! And I also have acted mature so that they would feel comfortable letting me live with other families.
I would suggest you look at Australia and New Zealand, because they both speak English, and programs are offered to there.
If you are really set on going to England, and wouldn't mind settling for a summer program, you could check into the programs at Oxbridge, and in Scotland, the summer programs at the University of St. Andrews.

What is it like to study abroad during high school?
after taking 3 years of french, i want to study abroad in france for about 4 months. the only thing is, i'm confused about the class requirements. i'll be studying abroad as a senior in high school in the US and i'm pursuing an IB diploma... don't know if that helps or means anything to you, but i'm just wondering how they work the classes out since i probably would not understand all the terms in french classes and such. ANY help is great, thanks.
What is it like to study abroad during high school?
Studying abroad is always a great adventure. You will experience the differences in school system and culture first hand. The younger you start with such experiences the easier you will find it to adapt.
So be prepared for culture shock. Just as examples: the legal age for drinking alcohol is lower and the legal age for driving cars is higher than in the US.
Talk with your guidance counselor and with your French teacher.
If you are lucky you can go with an official exchange program. This would have the advantage that your school knows which classes you will have in France. And they will know how to translate French grades into US grades. Be aware that the French school system is different from the US school system. Senior in high school compares approximately to the last year before the "bac".
If there is no exchange program available, talk with your counselor about the possibility to go to France privately and how to get credit for your studies there. If you go that route, sort the administrative hassles out and talk with your French teacher if and how he or she can help you with these and with finding a nice French school and a nice French family to stay.
The last possibility is going to France with a language school. But then you will not have the full immersion into the French school system and it definitely will not help you with your IB diploma.

I too have studied abroad for about 8 years, and have done the IB diploma course. I had studied french during those 8 years. Are you going to be doing the IB diploma in the US or in France?
As you might be knowing, for the IB diploma, you would have to select 3 standard level courses and 3 higher level courses.
If you are new to the French language, then I suggest that you take up the standard level of french. I had studied french for about 6 yeards in Hong Kong and when I moved to Singapore to do my IB course, the level of french was completely different, not to scare you though. It took me about a month to adjust myself to their level, as I had many native speakers in my class.
In the classes, you will have to be prepared to write essays, reports, have oral tests including conversations, lectures that will all be graded, apart from your final exams.
Dont worry about not understanding everything and all the terms in classes, eventually you will get used to it, and a good dictionary will always help.
For your knowledge, there is also a beginners course to french as well, for starters in the language. Dont be tempted to switch over though, a little bit of perseverance and hard work will get you through the two years.

Being sponsored by a company is even less rare...if you're looking to study abroad you should google local programs, otherwise most companies aren't going to send a high school student--they're sending interns they hire from colleges. Good places to look for are international companies (like Boeing, etc)

My sister and I participated in the most amazing program in the most beautiful and safe beach resort in Spain called Santander. The program was so well organized and planned out so smoothly that we loved it there. Castilian is spoken and also we were so busy all the time with so many fun activities, so enriching we learned lots! We would attend classes in the morning mostly conversational and in the afternoons we had activities such as a bullfight, dance classes, a dinner out at the fishermen´s quarter, boat excursion... and then once a week there was a full day excursion to beautiful places of great interest such as the Guggenheim Museum, a hike along a Roman Route, middle age village, fishermen´s quarter, etc... all while living with a wonderful and caring host family. The greatest thing about this program is that they offer the possibility, only if your choice at no extra cost of coming with a friend to stay with, at same host family home, although if you want to live on your own that is possible, too. Also, they can guarantee for you to stay in a host family who has kids similar in age as you. It´s a fantastic program and I cannot stress enough the wonderful staff, the great classes, and the nice people. We also had time to go to the beach each day! As it is a beach resort, just right there. It´s fantastic that not many people know about this still undiscovered spot in Spain! Have fun and good luck. And the program is www.beautifulspain.com

Well, there are many resources to find study abroad programs in the region that interest you. The Internet is your best source of information if you have time. Most universities also have a dedicated office to study abroad programs. The problem is that these counselors are biased. There are also counselors that are independent like myself who specialize in one geographic areas or one subject. There is a fee to their service but usually that service will be very helpful to find the right program for your or to jump start your research in the right direction. Unfortunately Ireland is not my area of concentration so I can't help you much there. However study abroad.com and google can be of a great help.
Remember funding is available through your student loans and it is usually easier to get through your school. There are also scholarships but those are very limited. Spain and France are my areas and I usually suggest to my students to go SOLO with no middle man (STudy abroad programs and university sponsored programs). It is usually much cheaper for the same program and I strongly believe that you can pay for it from you summer job ( a six weeks in Spain can cost you around 2000 including flight food and stay while in most programs you have to pay 3500 just in tution).

How many bags should I pack for 3 months study abroad?
Okay I'm going to Osaka, Japan next spring for study abroad but I do not know how many bags I should pack for 3 months. I will be staying with a family so I do not need household wares really but I have never been away from my home for over 3 months so I do not know what to take. I know I can buy the essentials over there like shampoo, toothpaste, etc. The number of bags I want to take is endless but the number I can carry is what I need to know. This is my first trip on a plane so I do not know how people can have 5 or more bags with them moving about at the airport. I'm also going 2 be changing planes as well so I need to be somewhat mobile. If you can help please do so. Even personal experiences are fine with me. The more I know, the better. (^.^)

I could manage with one large duffel bag, but thats me. I'm a traveller, not a tourist. Most people can get buy with two bags this size. A hint though, don't assume the weather will always be cool, the weather in Japan is very sporadic, so pack a variation of clothes.

How many bags should I pack for 3 months study abroad?
I could manage with one large duffel bag, but thats me. I'm a traveller, not a tourist. Most people can get buy with two bags this size. A hint though, don't assume the weather will always be cool, the weather in Japan is very sporadic, so pack a variation of clothes.
Reply:There is a weight allowance on planes, and you get charged extra for exceeding it. Call the airline beforehand to find out what it is. Have fun in Japan!!

Is it a bad idea to study abroad if I am in IB?
I am a high school student in the US and would love to study abroad next year, my junior year, but I do not know if it is the best idea.
Will I be able to take IB courses in England?
If not, can I continue with IB when I return?

You're in junior which roughly translates to six form college which is the year where you start A-Levels or IBs (whichever you pick). So if you want to go next year is the perfect time!

Study abroad. I'm in Portugal right now, as a Sophomore in College with a full ride to my University back in the states and I wish I had had the opportunity to study abroad in High School (parents wouldn't let me coupled with an incompetent administration).
Do it and don't worry about what your highschool's course requirements say is good for college. IB's, AP's, clubs, leadership, sports, and some community service will get you into college, not your highschool's "major".
IB, you know, stands for INTERNATIONAL business. Any INTERNATIONAL experience, like studying abroad, is a huge help in the field. Studying abroad before college looks impressive to people anyway.

There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content.
There are quite alot of Australian universities offering Civil Engineering to international students. To find out the course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to Dept of Education, Science and Technology (http://cricos.dest.gov.au) and IDP Education Australia website (www.idp.edu.au). IDP is an organisation that gives information to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification.
Living cost... Sydney and Canberra have the highest living cost, followed by Melbourne %26amp; Brisbane, then Perth, Darwin, Adelaide %26amp; Tasmania the lowest. I am attaching a weblink from one of the uni in Melbourne as an indication.

What is better- to study abroad for a semester or a whole year?
I am wondering if studying abroad for an entire year is worth it... I am going next year (my Junior year) and I am able to graduate early as it already is... But I am wondering if this would complicate things back home with friends and employers... I would appreciate any feedback!

It all depends- if you want to become fluent in a foreign language and will be studying in a foreign country, it might take a year to fully adapt and get the whole experience (or speak like a native). Going abroad PERIOD is "worth it." Try talking to your employer to see what they say. If they don't want you to leave for a year, come back and find another job- guaranteed you will be more marketable because you'll have had the across-the-sea experience. And if your friends are really your friends, you'll stay in touch. Today's world is so connected with email and cell phones that are compatible overseas that it's almost impossible NOT to keep in touch! I encourage you to go a whole year, but ultimately, if you aren't comfortable with it, maybe starting out with a semester and seeing what happens is worth a shot.
Reply:You don't say what country you are going to ... but if your stay includes language immersion, a year is definitely the way to go! You will absorb so much more of the language and culture. Many students say it takes a semester just so they can really feel at home and talk to people! I think it would greatly pay off for you!

If your in college, all it can do for you is make you more marketable to have the experience. If you go through a your university study abroad program that is affiliated with foreign univ. you can use the units/credits towards your degree. So no time lost there. I have done half of my required classes for my Spanish BA in Mexico. I am enrolled here, it is just that my class room happens to be in Mexico. Costs are similar to here and no time is wasted. If fact by going to Mexico I am graduating early as the classes are accelerated in Mexico.
If your in high school, very few if any US high schools will accept foreign credits.
So graduate early if you can.
If your going abroad to learn a language, go for a year. You will learn it that way.
If your going for the experience whatever works best for you.
As far as jobs and friends, it can be worked out one way or another, just depends on how important it is for you to go. Jobs come and go, friends will always be there. Again, depends on what you want to do.

I go to college in New York and I'm studying abroad in Germany for a year. The thing is though, recently my parents moved to Germany for a 2 year work assignment and I've been in Germany for all my breaks and I really like it. I have a feeling that I'm going to want to end up staying in Germany rather than going back to school in the U.S. Would it be hard for me to transfer to the German University since I'm a U.S. citizen?
